Mega Millions Raised From Katrina Relief Benefit Concerts

Millions of dollars have been raised to aid the many in New Orleans and surrounding areas who lost everything to Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans favorite sons Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick,Jr. and Aaron Neville blazed the trail for others headlining a concert aired shortly after the devastating impact of the storm was felt. That concert alone raised $40 million dollars.

Also, BET held a fundraiser on Friday September 9, "Saving Ourselves" (SOS) , a star studded event with a call-in from former President Clinton who had some rather meaningful comments and questions. Rappers P.Diddy and Jay-Z presented a check for 1 million dollars from the New York Hip-Hop community. The total raised from this concert was 11 million.

Please see the following BET and CNN articles for further details:

Musical relief efforts continue with upcoming concerts on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at New York's Radio City Music Hall. See our September 13 post below for details. Now the challenge is how to spend the money most effectively and wisely so that those suffering will feel the full benefit of humanitarian outreach of such magnitude...We'll stay tuned to these developments...

BET's relief telethon was very moving, very touching and is very worthwhile. Here's the link to the SOS video offered on BET's website. I highly recommend taking the time to view it if you missed the live show or forgot to set your Tivo.
